What Our Customers Are Saying... Part 1
Like they say, love your work and you’ll never feel like you’re working.
Well that’s Brendon Turner, an absolute passionate aquarist, who has been earning money and saving up for college by working at a local fish store for the past 2 years. Not only is he able to earn money for his own aquariums; Brandon is also able to save for his college . And soon, he will be going to the university to study Marine Biology and specialize in reef conservation. Now that’s what you call passion.
Paying it Forward
In his two years of working at the local fish store, Brandon’s knowledge about fish and the aquatic ecosystems has deeply broadened - thanks to his co-workers who unselfishly shared their knowledge; and even customers who are fish enthusiasts who shared their experience and best practices. From his basic knowledge of the marine life, Brandon is now able to pay it forward and help his local community about fish and assist them about their needs and concerns.
How Important is Water Quality in Fishkeeping?
“Water quality is important to me because my fish rely on clean and healthy water. Using SJ Wave's strips I’m able to test for chlorine and other contaminants found in my water to make sure it is safe to use. They also help me test my aquariums for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Ph, and Hardness.”
Brendon Turner - Our Customer
Clean water is the lifeblood of any aquarium ecosystem, serving as the primary habitat for fish and other aquatic organisms. Just as clean air is vital for human health, clean water is crucial for the well-being and survival of aquarium fish. Maintaining pristine water quality is not merely about aesthetics; it's a fundamental aspect of responsible aquarium care. Clear water isn't always clean; by using water testing kits you are ensured that the aquatic environment of you fish is free from harmful pollutants, toxins, and pathogens. Let's delve deeper into why clean water is paramount for the health and vitality of your aquarium fish.
Early Detection of Problems
Regular testing allows you to detect any changes or imbalances in water parameters before they escalate into more significant issues. For example, a sudden increase in ammonia or nitrite levels can indicate problems with filtration or overfeeding, which, if left unchecked, could harm your fish.
Maintaining Water Stability
Fish are sensitive to changes in their environment. Regular testing helps you maintain stable water conditions by ensuring that parameters such as pH, temperature, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate remain within acceptable ranges. This stability reduces stress on your fish and promotes overall health and well-being.
Preventing Fish Stress and Disease
Poor water quality is a significant cause of stress and susceptibility to diseases in aquarium fish. By regularly testing and maintaining optimal water parameters, you can create a healthy environment that strengthens fish immune systems and reduces the likelihood of illness.
Optimizing Aquarium Conditions
Different fish species and aquatic plants have specific requirements regarding water chemistry. Regular testing allows you to tailor the aquarium environment to meet the needs of your inhabitants. For example, adjusting pH and hardness levels to mimic the natural habitat of your fish can promote their growth, breeding, and overall vitality.
Preventing Algae Growth
Imbalances in water parameters, such as high nutrient levels or excessive light exposure, can promote algae growth. Regular testing helps you identify and address these imbalances before they lead to unsightly algae blooms, which can negatively impact the aesthetic appeal of your aquarium and compete with plants for nutrients.
Maintaining Equipment Functionality
Regular testing not only benefits your fish but also helps ensure the proper functioning of aquarium equipment such as filters, heaters, and CO2 systems. Monitoring water parameters allows you to identify any issues with equipment performance (e.g.,clogged filters or malfunctioning heaters) that could compromise water quality.
Oxygenation
Clean water ensures adequate oxygen levels, crucial for the respiration of fish. Oxygen is dissolved in water, and pollutants or waste can deplete oxygen levels, leading to stress or suffocation for fish.
Waste Removal
Fish produce waste in the form of ammonia, which can quickly build up in the aquarium. Clean water helps to dilute and remove these waste products, preventing toxic ammonia levels that can harm fish.
In summary, regularly testing the quality of aquarium water is essential for maintaining a healthy, stable, and thriving aquatic ecosystem. It empowers you to proactively address issues, optimize conditions for your fish and plants, and enjoy a beautiful and harmonious aquarium environment

Fun Fact About Brandon
Brandon is obsessed with Betta Macrostoma and is hoping to be a breeder one day. The Macrostoma Betta, also known as the Brunei Beauty betta, is included in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species on which they are listed as
Vulnerable mainly due to their habitat being constantly taken away; hence, most pet macrostomas are raised in captivity.
It is endemic to Borneo where it’s known only from Brunei Darussalam and the northern tip of the Malaysian state of Sarawak. Macrostoma Bettas are best suited for experienced aquarists, because these fish can be somewhat temperamental when it comes to water chemistry changes, making them one of the most sought-after species of betta fish amongst enthusiasts!
